Once a city named in its own right, Bremerhaven, in spite of its role as literally 'Bremen Harbour', and close proximity to the major German city of Bremen, still retains city status as well as a distinct set of cultural, and historic attractions. Historically and currently one of the major German ports it has been the main point of emigration from this part of Europe and today operates a very large container port service. Of great strategic importance, most recently during World War II, and largely destroyed as a result, much of the city has been rebuilt since and Bremerhaven hotels are a part of its recent and ongoing developmental successes.

Many of the attractions of the city are associated with its history as a departure point for emigration and maritime endeavors. The German Emigration Center is a museum which details historical German emigration, particularly to the United States, and contains searchable databanks of emigration records. There is also the German Maritime Museum, which contains exhibits related to all manner of German shipping throughout history as well as housing an important academic maritime research center. There are numerous museum ships to explore in the harbor, including the 14th century Hansekogge, the Seute Deern three-masted sailing ship, and the Willhelm Bauer, a type XXI U-Boat.

There are further attractions at the fishing port, such as the Atlanticum Aquarium and Zoo, which features numerous marine and terrestrial Arctic species and there is a major sailing convention every five years, known as Sail Bremerhaven, which attracts tall ships from various parts of the world. Much of the city center is, by necessity, modern in style but is in any case very pleasant and with an impressive architectural skyline. It has all the shops bars, and restaurants expected from a major port city and the local hotels occupy points throughout.

The city is geographically isolated from Bremen but is nevertheless connected to its large city neighbor by road and rail services. There are three train stations, north, central and south, and trains additionally connect the city with Hamburg, Osnabruck, and Cuxhaven. The city of Bremen is some 60km south and definitely worth a visit for anyone with some time to spend in the region. The architectural highlight is the Town Hall, a medieval and renaissance style building which is now home to a very stylish restaurant. Nearby is the Guild Hall, in a Flemish inspired design, and the 13th century Cathedral St Petri. There are a great many more attractions in Bremen old town and many modern attractions too, including a science center, art museum, and natural history museum.
